Dear Colleagues,
Comes November month, people of Karnataka are in a joyous mood to celebrate the Karnataka Raajyotsava. In the month of November every year, the people of Karnataka commemorate the formation of state with several activities like, cultural, literary and folk dance which showcase the rich culture and heritage of Karnataka.

Today morning, I was overwhelmed with joy to see the celebrations arranged by our young Kannada colleagues starting with lighting the lamp , to the "Dollu Kunitha" dance. I am sure the rest of the events in the day will be as interesting and absorbing.

Karnataka have contributed immensely to the India's rich folkloric tradition also. It has the folk dances like: Yakshagaana, Veeragaase, Dollu Kunitha, Kamsaale Kunitha and others. Dollu Kunitha is a popular drum dance, which we enjoyed very much!. The large drums are decorated with colored cloth, and are slung around the necks of men. The dances are at times accompanied with songs relating to religious praise or wars. It spoke volumes of the rich traditions of India. I come from Bengal , which is also extremely rich in culture and traditions. I enjoyed every bit of the dance celebrations!

Karnataka's contribution to music is unparalleled. It developed a school of music that is called Karnatic School. Carnatic music spread all over south India and it is one of the two dominant musical styles in India. To top it all, Pandit Bhim Sen Joshi, one of the sons of the soil of Karnataka has been awarded the BHARAT RATNA award, something I am sure all Indians will feel proud of!

Karnataka has contributed in a great way for the rich monumental heritage of India in the form of Hampi, Pattadakallu, Badami, Beluru, Halebidu and others. Among these, Hampi and Pattadakallu are listed in the World Heritage Centers of UNESCO.

For the last 2.5 years I have adopted Bangalore and Karnataka as my adopted home. My children are now studying in Bangalore. My wife and me , along with our family, are liking and enjoying the rich traditions of Karnataka. Over the next year, we do hope to go around an savor this beautiful state.

I take this opportunity to salute this great tradition and culture and wish all Symphonians great times!

With Regards,
Amitava
